Gerry McGroarty was born on February 2, 1986 and grew up in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Bishop Hoban High School. In high school, Gerry McGroarty was a 2-time All-State selection and his 64-yard field goal is the longest in Pennsylvania history and the 4th longest in high school football history.

After red-shirting his freshman season in 2004, Gerry McGroarty appeared in 3 games for his first season in 2005. He did not see action in 2006 or 2007.
